Multimedia Artist Sofia Malemina: Shaping the Intersection of Art, Technology, and Philosophy

In November 2024, Sofia Malemina unveiled her first solo exhibition, Abiogenesis, in collaboration with Sensity Studio. Hosted at art’otel London Hoxton, the exhibition presented an immersive installation exploring the Beginning phenomena through a biological prism. Inspired by Alexander Oparin’s theory of abiogenesis – the idea of life originating from non-living matter — Sofia dives deep into the enigmatic processes that highlight the origins of existence and transformation.

The installation is graphically divided into five giant screens, each of them signifying the life cycles: birth, growth, reproduction, death and afterlife. Through kinetic abstract visuals, Sofia employed symbolic representations of water, wind, and other natural elements to depict life’s continuous evolution. The work is accompanied by a sound layer, signifying the hypnotic play of controversies between metaphysical and esoteric philosophies.

“Abiogenesis allowed me to subjectify sensorial attitudes into an immersive experience,” Sofia shared. “I wanted to create a space where the audience could reflect on the concept of existence, and sense its fluidity,” she said.

A Philosophy-Driven Artistic Practice

Sofia’s artistic mission is to challenge and reshape conventional human perceptions and experiences on themes like identity, familiarity, and tangibility, as well as the physical and virtual dimensions. She masterfully blends concepts like existentialism, relativism and postdigital art, experimenting with digital technologies across various spheres. Inspired by the philosophies of Jean Baudrillard and John Cage, she resiliently augments ideas of silence, non-existence, and the tension between presence and reality.

This philosophy is evident in the Nothingness series, where she uses AI-generated symbols and 3D LED sculptures to explore and express the absence of sound and matter. The standout experiment, “One Day in Silence” (ODiS), transforms the lack of verbal communication into a creative force, echoing John Cage’s revolutionary perspective on silence.

Looking Ahead

Sofia Malemina ventures ever deeper into the realm of time-based media, fearlessly redefining the edges of contemporary multimedia art. Her relentless drive to challenge perceptions and spark profound introspection positions her as a commanding voice in the fusion of philosophy, technology, and artistic innovation. With a daring embrace of the unknown, Sofia invites us into her ever-evolving world — one that provokes, disrupts, and compels us to question the very fabric of reality.
