The series of screenings will end with a meeting with Andrey Zvyagintsev – after watching “Elena” the audience will be able to ask the director questions in Q&A format. This is a rare opportunity to talk to the filmmaker about his work, his plans for the future and his views on contemporary cinema.

Andrey Zvyagintsev is one of the most famous Russian filmmakers, whose films have been recognized all over the world. Born in 1964 in Novosibirsk, he graduated from the acting faculty of GITIS and then moved into directing. His debut film The Return (2003) became an immediate sensation, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
Zvyagintsev’s films have twice been nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category (“Leviathan” and “Nelyubovia”) and have won numerous awards, including the Golden Globe, the Jury Prize and the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
In his works, the director invariably addresses themes of human dignity, social injustice and the inner conflict of the individual with the world. His films are deeply symbolic, full of visual metaphors and elaborate dramaturgy.
“Leviathan” (2014)
An epic drama inspired by the book of Job reveals the tragic story of an ordinary man in conflict with the system. The protagonist, Nikolai, a car mechanic, is forced to fight for his home against the corrupt authorities in the Russian countryside. The film won the Golden Globe, the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar.

“Dislove” (2017)
Psychological drama about the crisis of a family where the spouses, on the verge of divorce, lose interest in their son. When the boy disappears, they are forced to face their own emotional coldness. The film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA award.

“Elena” (2011)
The movie explores the thin edges of morality and social inequality. Elena is a former nurse married to a wealthy elderly man, but is faced with a difficult choice: to sacrifice her principles for the well-being of her son from her first marriage or to abandon her illusions. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

On March 26, after the screening of “Elena” the audience will meet with the director. In the Q&A format Andrey Zvyagintsev will answer questions from the audience. In addition, a limited number of tickets are available for an exclusive reception in the presence of the director on the occasion of the completion of the retrospective.
